We have had a brilliant first week back at Micklem. There has been some fantastic learning taking place and it has been the last week of our swimming lessons. Swimming has been another resounding success with huge progress made across the board. The children that I have spoken to have really enjoyed it and could talk to me about how they had improved their skills.
It was lovely to see so many Parents and Carers at Parents Evening this week. Thank you for your continued support with your children's education.
You may have noticed the developments taking place just inside the entrance to the playground this week. I am very excited to confirm that work has started on the PTA's project to build a new covered area for children to store their bikes and scooters. The astro turf has now been laid (so they won't get covered in mud), and the covered area will be going in shortly. This means that children will not have to take their bikes and scooters around the school to store them, there will be increased capacity for storage, and the storage will be under cover.
Thank you to all members of the PTA for their fundraising support and thank you to our school community that have contributed to fundraising at our PTA events.
Before half term, Reception, Year 1, 2 and 3 took part in drama workshops. They travelled to space, visiting different planets along the way and even defeated the evil alien that they met on their travels. It is fair to say that they thoroughly enjoyed the workshop!
For Bonfire Night we had a bonfire at Forest School. We watched Miss Evans light the fire. We could see colours and smoke. We heard crackling. We cooked apples, marshmallows and hot dogs. It was fun!
For fireworks and Diwali we threaded sparkly pipe cleaners through the holes of colanders and painted fireworks using cotton buds for our fine motor skills. We drew around our hand and then added mendhi patterns onto it. We did firework experiments predicting what would happen ... change colour .... mix it ... Our experiments were: Fizzing fireworks, colourful catherine wheel, shooting fireworks and exploding fireworks.
In Understanding the World, Reception have been learning about Diwali. We learnt that it is the Festival of Light. We loved learning about different cultures and beliefs!
After a week of arguments over who various leaf piles belong to, children from KS2 came together today to create a giant leaf pile! They are going to see what is left after the weekend and then add to it on Monday. They worked together beautifully and everyone appreciated that it was much more fun to work together than to argue over the leaf piles!
Anti-Bullying Week 2024 will take place from Monday 11th - Friday 15th November, with the theme: Choose Respect. In school we will be thinking about what respect means, how we show respect, and how to respectfully disagree with others.
Odd Socks Day for awareness of the week, is taking place on Tuesday 12th November, with adults and children being encouraged to wear odd socks to celebrate what makes us all unique. We are not asking for donations for this.
Click on the link below to learn more for parents and carers and how you can bring anti-bullying week to life at home.
We will be holding a Remembrance Assembly for the children, including a two-minute silence on Monday 11th November. This is a chance to reflect and remember the sacrifices that were made for our freedoms. The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal products are available to purchase at the School Office with 100% of the proceeds going to the charity.
This year we will be taking part in the Children in Need appeal on Friday 15th November 2024.
We are asking that your child/ children come into school wearing something yellow and spotty like Pudsey, or choose to side with the Gladiators and go for superhero style! You can get as creative as you like! Whatever you choose, wear something that will make your whole class smile.
In return, we ask that you make a donation to help with our fundraising and help make a difference to children’s lives.
Our Celebrating Cultures Day will take place on Friday 22nd November. On this day, our school community will come together to celebrate the diverse cultures that make up our community. We encourage children and staff to dress up in colourful and traditional attire representing your cultural heritage, by wearing colours of a regional or national flag that is important to you, or by wearing clothes that show a community you belong to such as Scouts or Brownies.
From 2.45pm, we will be welcoming families into our school hall to continue this celebration. This is an opportunity for you to host a stall and share something from your cultural heritage with our school community. This could be a traditional dish for people to try, a traditional art or craft for them to have a go at, traditional instruments to play... the list goes on! Please speak to Miss Palmer or the school office to let us know if you would like to host a stall, so we can arrange enough tables.

School Council
Some of our School Council stepped in to support disagreements on the playground this week. They saw that some children were finding lunchtime hard and took it upon themselves to ensure that those children found the adult support that they needed. Great job team!
House Captains
House Captains are working on a plan to celebrate our Dojo Points across the school. They will be creating an in-school display and considering how to reward the House that achieves the most each term.
